This Christmas I thought I might spoil myself, and what a gift I bought.
For those that are not that interested in tech, you are not going to be overwhelmed by this post, the rest please enjoy.
For a while now I have been borrowing a screen calibration kit to check the colours on my monitor are what i’m printing. So now I thought lets get one for myself, so I bought the ‘Spyder 5 Studio’. Why I bought this one I can't really tell you, just seemed the right one for me.
Firstly I have always used the paper manufacturers ICC profiles when printing, however never seemed 100% happy with my results. So with my new toy I thought I would try a new profile for my favourite goto paper Fotospeed’s PF Lustre 275, and WAW what a difference.
Anyone that has done this for themselves know its not a job that is quick. Having set a new profile for my screen, which made the colours look different to the previous profile. And then create a new paper profile, I thought I would look what one of my images now looked like printed.
For the first time in a while I saw really pleased with the outcome. Strangely when I showed some friends and family they could not make out why I was so happy, they both looked similar enough to pass as the same to them, but I could see the difference. Not to think I was mad I showed a fellow photographer friend the images, and immediately he noticed the differences that I did.
I’m not saying that anyone that is printing their own prints needs to splash out on an expensive bit of kit like this. However you defiantly need to consider the difference in the colours that you are showing on your screen to what will be printed. Wherever you may get them printed. Even the difference in the display on another persons screen. We photographers can spend hours adjusting a couple of days worth of shooting, especially landscape photography. Maybe it’s not the image at all.
I’m as guilty as most, spending money on camera’s, lenses and other photography ‘necessities’, this is the first time I think I have had true value for money. As I said at the beginning I don’t know why I chose this brand. I can’t tell you if this is better or worse than others. All I can say is that having everything calibrated with my ‘Spyder 5 Studio’ kit has made a difference to me.
